Overlooking the Navesink River, the 812-acre Hartshorne Woods Park offers over 15 miles of trails ranging from half-mile loops around the battery to 3-mile hikes into the heart of the park Set along one of the highest elevations on the Atlantic Coast, the park is known for its history (it was used as a military reservation during World War II), hilly terrain, and breathtaking views, especially in the fall.
Celebrate Thanksgiving at the Historic Village at Allaire
See how Thanksgiving was celebrated in the early 19th century at the Historic Village at Allaire, which offers some of the best fall activities for seniors and their families. Held Nov. 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Our Day of Thanks features special games on the village green, craft demonstrations, and cooking at the Allaire mansion and throughout the village. See a Show at the Count Basie Center for the Arts
Opened in 1926, the historic Count Basie Center for the Arts has hosted everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Count Basie himself, who is originally from Red Bank. Top events this fall include Smokey Robinson (Nov. 8) and Air Supply (Nov. 30). Open every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. through mid-November, the Galleria Red Bank Farmers Market Skills offers locally-grown produce and crafts. If you aren’t looking to buy anything, the market is worth a visit to take in the history and architecture of the site, which was built in 1907 and served as a textile factory during World War I and World War II.
