Celebrate Active Aging Week September 23 to 29

“Inspiring Wellness” – that’s the theme of this year’s Active Aging Week, which runs from September 23 to 29, 2018. This popular health week was created in 2003 by the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) and now in its 16th year, it’s expected to be bigger than ever.

Organizations, businesses, and senior centers across the world participate in Active Aging Week in an effort to promote healthy lifestyles and ongoing wellness. The Atrium at Navesink Harbor is proud to participate. We offer an event-packed week for our residents to inspire wellness and get them moving with fun, socially stimulating activities.

“Active Aging Week inspires wellness by encouraging people to participate as fully in life as possible at any age, regardless of health conditions,” said Colin Milner, ICAA’s founder and CEO. “As an association that recognizes and promotes the benefits of a multidimensional wellness approach, we created Active Aging Week as a time for people to get together and enjoy fun, positive life experiences, and maybe even adopt new activities on a longer-term basis.”

Ways to Participate in Active Aging Week at The Atrium

Our residents have a number of options to participate in Active Aging Week this year. The best part – participation is completely optional, and each resident can participate as much or as little as they’d like. The goal is to offer a little something for everyone, no matter their health status, age, or interests.

This year as we’ve done in previous years, activities are organized through our LivWell Program, which promotes wellness year-round through customized plans for residents. LivWell focuses on whole-person wellness, catering to each of the seven dimensions with a deep understanding of physical, intellectual, emotional, social, environment, spiritual and vocational needs.

LivWell offers many stimulating programs, including:

  • Arts
  • Cultural events
  • Guided meditation
  • Health and wellness education
  • Hiking and nature tours
  • Nordic walking
  • Pilates
  • Tai chi
  • And more

Promoting Active Wellness Year-Round

While we’re excited to bring a fun-filled week of activities to our residents for Active Aging Week, our wellness initiatives are already happening. There’s something new going on each week, no matter the health theme.

For example, back in August, we held an event called LivWell “Wellness Around the World” in which residents enjoyed “traveling” through Japan. Director of Dining Services, Chef Jeff Walla, demonstrated the art of Sushi making for all to enjoy along with tastings of varieties of Sake and Japanese whiskey. Other countries we “visited” in the “Wellness Around the World” program included New Zealand, Greece, Costa Rica, and Denmark. How were these countries chosen? They’re noted to be where people live the longest, happiest, and healthiest lives on the planet!
